Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation Recognizes Northwestern Mutual for its Support of Childhood Cancer Research

It’s with heartfelt gratitude that we say thank you to Northwestern Mutual for raising critical funds for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. Together, Northwestern Mutual offices raised more than $515,000 through its Race for Research. These dollars will support 10,300 hours of childhood cancer research. Thank you Northwestern Mutual for joining us in the fight. You are making a difference!

Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation

In 2000 Alexandra “Alex” Scott decided to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to fight childhood cancer. Alex continued to host these lemonade stands up until 2004 when she lost her own battle against cancer. Since then Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation has become a national organization that shares the same vision as Alex. In 2012, Northwestern Mutual launched its signature national philanthropic program to accelerate the search for a cure to childhood cancer and to provide support to kids and families facing the daily struggles of these diseases. In the first year of the Childhood Cancer Program the Northwestern Mutual family donated more than $1,000,000 to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. Our Downtown Denver office has hosted multiple lemonade stands this year to “fight cancer one cup at a time.”

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity was established in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller to address the need for affordable housing. Since then more than 600,000 homes have been built. These homes are sold with a zero-interest loan and families have to invest $1,500 to pay for closing costs and put in 250 sweat-equity hours (per applicant) to help build their own home, as well as the homes of other Habitat families. Northwestern Mutual in Downtown Denver sponsored a build for Habitat for Humanity- Metro Denver.  The project was a six-unit complex, and also happened to be Habitat’s 500th homebuilding project in the Denver Metro Area.

Junior Achievement

Junior Achievement is the world’s largest organization that is dedicated to educating students about workforce readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on programs. Junior Achievement programs help prepare young people for the real world by showing them how to generate wealth and effectively manage it, how to create jobs which make their communities more robust, and how to apply entrepreneurial thinking to the workplace. Northwestern Mutual volunteers with these programs to educate students on money management and finance.
